November 1, 2011 -

Equitable Life raised more than $104,000 for its 2011 United Way (UW) campaign.  Held during October, the campaign featured a variety of events both at Head Office and in Regional Offices across the country, including bake sales, raffles, bingo, silent and online auctions and a spare change drive.

"Equitable Life employees continue to be generous when it comes to giving back to their communities," says Kari Gough, co-chair of Equitable Life's 2011 United Way campaign.  "During tough economic times, this generosity is even more important," she adds.

"Every day, Canada's United Ways work locally to change living conditions for the better. The issues they face may vary, but the values and purpose that drive them are the same: to strengthen their communities and improve the quality of life for Canadians," says Jan Varner, Chief Executive Officer, United Way Kitchener Waterloo and Area.

Next to governments, the UW is the largest funder of the voluntary sector and social services in Canada.  Each year, UW raise upwards of $480 million, the vast majority of which is reinvested in local communities to support programs and services directed at improving the social conditions of Canadians.

In Waterloo, through community investments, the United Way helps local programs, services and initiatives which support five regional priorities:

  1.  All Children and Youth Reach their Potential;
  2. All Families are Strong;
  3. All Neighbourhoods are Inclusive and Thriving;
  4. All Newcomers are Welcome and Supported; and
  5. All People are Economically Secure.
