(Waterloo, ON) – Equitable Life of Canada today announced that Senior Vice-President and Chief Financial Officer Sheila Hart, FSA, FCIA, will be retiring from the organization in May of this year. With this retirement, Equitable Life also announced the appointment of Melanie Kliska, FSA, FCIA, to this role, effective May 12, 2023.
Ms. Hart joined the organization in 2016 in this role. Since then, she has been accountable for the oversight of all aspects of financial management for the company, including financial reporting, risk management, capital management, all actuarial matters, internal audit, taxation, expense management and analysis. Under her leadership, the company has maintained a position of financial stability and strength, with one of the strongest capital ratios in the industry as measured by the Life Insurance Capital Adequacy Test (LICAT).
Ms. Kliska joined Equitable Life in 2012 and has held progressively senior roles throughout her tenure with the organization. In 2022, Ms. Kliska was appointed Financial Reporting and Capital Management Vice President. Prior to that, she served as Lead, IFRS 17 during which time she initiated the complex process of the work to transition to the IFRS 17 accounting standards and then co-led this project to successful completion, ensuring Equitable Life was prepared for when the new standards came into effect on January 1.
“I want to express my heartfelt gratitude for the leadership and guidance that Sheila has provided to the Finance team and to the organization throughout her time at Equitable Life. We look forward to her continued support in the coming months as these responsibilities transition to Melanie,” said President and Chief Executive Officer Fabien Jeudy. “The knowledge and experience that Melanie has gained throughout her time at Equitable Life will position her well to take on these expanded responsibilities and provide leadership for all aspects of financial management.”
